Policy & Advocacy
FNEHA brings Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priorities, community voice and evidence into national policy, investment and systems reform.
National advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health
Policy and systems reform is central to FNEHA's national work. We advocate at the national level for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health priorities, working with governments, the health sector and decision-makers to ensure that community voice, evidence and self-determination shape policy, investment and accountability.
FNEHA's policy and advocacy work spans national planning, sector coordination and the Eye Health Collaborative.
Policy priorities
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Plan
FNEHA is leading the development of the next National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Plan — a shared national direction for policy, investment, service delivery and accountability.
Closing the gap in refractive error
FNEHA, Optometry Australia and the Fred Hollows Foundation have united in a national effort to tackle refractive error — one of the largest contributors to avoidable vision loss for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Workforce equity
FNEHA advocates for systemic change in how the eye health sector recruits, trains and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and for investment in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce development.
Community-controlled models of care
FNEHA advocates for culturally safe, community-controlled models of eye health and vision care that meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Uluru Statement from the Heart
FNEHA supports in full the Uluru Statement from the Heart: Voice, Treaty and Truth, and continues to call for health equity, justice and the upholding of the rights and voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Eye Health Collaborative
The Eye Health Collaborative brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, organisations and allies working across eye health to strengthen coordination, equity and investment in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye care. The Collaboration places Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, community control and sovereignty of space at the centre of collective action.
