A shared national direction for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health
Australia has made important progress in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health, but significant gaps remain. Culturally safe and coordinated eye care pathways remain inconsistent nationally, and services are not sufficient to meet population needs. With demand for eye care expected to continue growing towards 2030, a coordinated national approach is needed to build on progress, address persistent gaps and ensure the eye health system is equipped to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into the future.
First Nations leadership. National collaboration.
The First Nations Eye Health Alliance (FNEHA) is leading the development of the next National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Plan. Working with our key partners, The Fred Hollows Foundation and the University of Western Australia, the plan will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led, culturally grounded and evidence-informed, providing a shared national direction for communities, governments, health services and the eye health sector. It will guide future priorities for policy, investment, service delivery, accountability and system reform.
Establishing the principles to guide the development of the next National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Plan
A Delphi research methodology is being utilised to develop shared principles that will inform the next national plan.
Aim: Identify and agree on the foundational principles for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Plan.
Approach: A structured, multi-round Delphi process using anonymous feedback and iterative refinement to support respectful dialogue and build consensus. Participants contribute to shaping principles, while Indigenous voices remain central.
Research Process
The data is collected mostly through Qualtrics and adheres to data sovereignty principles.
Round one engagement occurs through two distinct pathways:
1: Face-to-face yarning at NATSIEHC26, and an online Qualtrics survey that is currently open.
Round 2 and 3 will be through a Qualtrics online survey.
Once the priorities are identified through consensus, FNEHA will utilise this to write a draft of the next national plan that will be socialised in the sector before finalisation and launch.

Participation is voluntary and confidential. Your participation will involve completing three rounds of online surveys, which may take up to 60 minutes in total over a few weeks.
