NATSIEHC — Our Story

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Conference has brought the national eye health sector together since 2017.

The conference series was established through Indigenous Eye Health at the University of Melbourne, now Minum Barreng: Indigenous Eye Health Unit, as part of the national work to Close the Gap for Vision.

Over time, the conference increasingly centred Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, voice and self-determination.

In 2022 the conference was overseen by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership group, and the 2022 and 2023 conferences provided important spaces for First Nations delegates to shape the future of national eye health leadership.

In 2024, the First Nations Eye Health Alliance became the formal host of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Conference, marking an important transition of the conference into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisational leadership.
