Strengthening First Nations leadership in eye health
The First Nations Eye Health Alliance is leading the transition of nationally recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health promotion campaigns into First Nations ownership.
Through a partnership with the Minum Barreng Indigenous Eye Health Unit, FNEHA is now the custodian of Check Today, See Tomorrow and Eyecare Now, Eyecare Always. These campaigns will continue to be freely available to communities and the sector, while future directions are shaped under First Nations leadership.
Shaping the future of eye health policy through the development of a First Nations-led eye care plan
FNEHA is leading the development of the next Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Plan in partnership with the University of Western Australia and support of the Fred Hollows Foundation.
The Plan will centre Indigenous voices, evidence, and lived experience to guide national policy, investment, and systems reform, ensuring eye health solutions are culturally safe, effective, and sustainable.

Listening to communities
Ngaaminya Project: A First Nations-led project mapping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community expectations of good eye health for children. This is a First Nations-led project mapping what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities believe good eye health looks like for children.
By listening directly to parents, carvers, educators, and health workers, the project strengthens community-led solutions and informs future child eye health services and policy.

Building tomorrow’s First Nations eye health workforce
WISE is a national workforce development initiative led by the First Nations Eye Health Alliance and funded through the Fred Hollows Foundation. The work will strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation, capability, and leadership across eye health professions.
The project focuses on making career pathways clear, accessible, and culturally safe, supporting people from early education through to professional practice.
WISE brings together communities, educators, training organisations, and health services to build a strong, sustainable workforce for the future.
Please email us on heyyoumob@fneha.com.au if you would like to get involved.

This project seeks to map the voices and stories of at least key leaders who have worked tirelessly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye care, health, and wellbeing for their entire lives. Their stories will create an opportunity to bridge generations, enabling young people to learn directly from leaders who have walked this path and carry the authority of lived experience, language, Country, and culture into their journeys in eye care and health. Thank you to the Annamila First Nations Foundation for seeding this important work.
If you would like to nominate an elder in your community for consideration, please email us at heyyoumob@fneha.com.au
If you are a funder with the capacity to support the documentation of these stories, please contact us at finance@fneha.com.au.
